06/04/17 Ospreys in Somesville

As I said in the previous post, the fish were running at this pond in Somerville, Maine. The ospreys were picking off the alewives all day long.

  1. Super images Ray. Love to see them fishing. Hard photo to capture. Love the one coming out of the water!

Ray, I love your work. It would be great to know some of your settings for these pictures so us amateurs can learn from you.

Hi Chuck. These were taken at pretty much early evening. The light was low, so I shot them wide open at F4 at 2000 ISO, on Aperture Priority and let the camera select the shutter speed. Normally I would shoot at F8 on AP if I have enough light, as that seems to be my sweet spot. I try to make sure the shutter speed is 2000 and up for action shots if I have the light. Good Luck, Ray.

Sequence of the Osprey in flight doesn’t get any better!

  5. Ray, you evoke ospreys as powerfully majestic as eagles, and honor even ducks! I’ve never seen an osprey carrying a fish backwards before! How delightful – the fish looks chagrined… smiles c
